How Safety Shapes Your Stress Response (A Client Story That Hit Me This Week)

1 1 somatic coaching nervous system regulation

You know when you know something deeply, professionally and logically but then a client puts it all into action and it reminds you of the real impacts of this work.

That happened to me this week, and I wanted to share.

The Story

One of my clients has been working with me for six weeks had a big job interview coming up.

The night before he had a panic attack.

Late at night.

Heart racing.

Body on high alert.

But here’s the magic….

While the fear and panic came in and swept through, he chose to pause.

He recognised what was happening.

And he went to the resources we’ve been building together.

The breathwork audios, the grounding techniques, the safety we’ve been cultivating session after session.

And within two minutes, his system began to settle.

Not just because of the technique.

But because of the relationship his body has been forming with safety for the past six weeks.

The Science

Nervous system regulation is your body’s ability to move between activation and calm, happy and sad, anger and joy, frustration and ease and every other emotion in between. It’s your ability to feel safe enough to MOVE and not get stuck.

It’s your ability to LIVE a full life

It’s not about never feeling stressed.

It’s about having enough internal safety to come back down again.

Your nervous system doesn’t just respond to logic, it responds to signals.

Every time you practise a somatic tool, you’re not just doing a technique.

You’re teaching your body:

  • This sensation is safe.
  • This activation is normal..
  • This emotion can move through me.
  • I know how to come back down.

This is how capacity and resilience is built….through repetition, safety and embodied experience..

The moment it clicked…

He said it beautifully, ‘it helped me find a rhythm and safety in the storm. ‘

We’re not meant to avoid stress.

We’re not meant to avoid overwhelm, panic, sadness, fear, or anger.

Storms will come, that’s inevitable and that is living life….

BUT

We can feel safe enough to be in it whilst the storm passes through..

We’re meant to have the internal resources so these moments don’t knock us out for hours, days, weeks or months.

That’s what allowed him to settle, breathe and eventually drift back to sleep.

If you’re moving through chronic stress, overwhelm or emotional overload, this is the work we do inside my 1:1 coaching UNBOUND.
