The SCP Framework: Why Safety Comes Before Performance

scp framework joy

Understanding how Safety, Capacity and Performance create lasting change through nervous system regulation.

What is the SCP Framework?

Many people try to create change by focusing on their performance first. They push harder, develop better habits, become more disciplined and try to override internal stress signals.

But when the nervous system is operating from chronic stress, more effort only creates more pressure and that doesn’t lead to positive change.

This is why, with all my work, I work within my SCP Framework: Safety, Capacity and Performance.

SCP isn’t a quick fix.  It’s a model that builds. Safety creates capacity. Capacity creates performance…like Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

Before we can truly thrive, our basic needs need to be met. Safety is a basic need.

Let me explain.

Safety: The Foundations of lasting change

Everything begins with safety.

When I talk about safety, I don’t just mean food on the table and a roof over your head. I’m talking about letting your body know that there are no imminent threats surrounding you

Our nervous system is designed to keep us alive.

When it senses danger, it prepares us to fight, flee, freeze or protect ourselves.

That response is VERY intelligent

The challenge is that in the modern world many of us spend months (or even years) living in a state of chronic stress.

Thousands of years ago, stress helped us escape immediate danger (tigers).

Today, the tiger looks very different.

constant deadlines, poor sleep, constant notifications, family pressures, fertility struggles, cost of living – you name it… its keeping your body switched on.

The problem is that the nervous system doesn’t always distinguish between physical danger and constant psychological pressure.

What was once a short term stress response becomes the body’s default.

Breathing becomes quicker and shallower, heart rate stays elevated, muscles remain braced, we rely on external coping mechanisms and the body uses more energy simply trying to keep you safe.

You might notice:

  • Tight, shallow breathing.
  • Racing thoughts.
  • Difficulty switching off.
  • Irritability.
  • Digestive changes.
  • Feeling exhausted but unable to relax.
  • Constant muscle tension.
  • Always feeling switched on

The nervous system is constantly waiting to escape a threat.

When we work on safety, it’s reducing the load on the nervous system, improving sleep, looking at your breath, your habits, behaviours, nervous system – it’s the full picture.

The aim with safety?. It’s reducing the noise in the system so we can interpret information more clearly.

Capacity: Building Resilience Through Nervous System Support

Your capacity starts to increase once we have reduced the noise in the system.

Capacity is your ability to:

  • experience emotions without becoming consumed by them
  • recover after stressful periods
  • think clearly under pressure
  • adapt when life changes
  • remain connected to yourself during difficult moments
  • respond rather than react

Nervous system regulation is often misunderstood.

People imagine nervous system work is about becoming calm all the time, a straight line… but capacity is about the line becoming a wave and you riding the wave, but not moving into overwhelm or exhaustion.

When you understand your capacity you are able to work with the excitement, pressure, disappointment, laughter,  play and it does not disconnect you from you.

In this stage, we are allowing your nervous system to become more flexible, adaptable and you become more connected to yourself.

Performance: Reconnecting with Life

This is the part of the framework that happens naturally once you have allowed for safety and capacity aspects to grow.

When you have achieved the previous it shifts from

Working harder, achieving more, always being switched on and performing more…

To having the energy, clarity and confidence to engage with the people, experiences and opportunities that matter most.

It’s making decisions because you know you have a choice.

It’s feeling present with your family.

Having the energy to exercise because you want to not because you feel you should.

Being creative.

Laughing more.

Sleeping better.

Having difficult conversations without becoming overwhelmed.

Living with more joy.

You’re making choices because they matter to you…not because your nervous system is trying to keep you safe.

Nervous system regulation isn’t about slowing your life down forever.

It’s about creating the foundation that allows you to live it fully.

When safety comes first and capacity grows, performance becomes sustainable rather than driven by stress.

How I use the SCP framework in my coaching

Through my work as a Somatic Stress & Breathwork Coach, I use the SCPT Framework alongside science-backed breathwork, somatic coaching and nervous system education to help people understand their stress responses and create meaningful life long change.

The tools I use may vary.

Breathwork.

Somatic coaching.

Nervous system education.

Breathing pattern analysis.

Coaching

But every journey is guided by the same principle.

Build safety.

Expand capacity.

Performance becomes a natural consequence.

What is the SCP Framework?

The SCP Framework is the approach I use to help people create lasting change by focusing on three key areas: Safety, Capacity and Performance.

Rather than jumping straight into improving performance, we start by helping the nervous system feel safe. From there, we build your capacity to handle life’s demands with greater flexibility and resilience. As safety and capacity grow, performance naturally follows not just at work, but in how you think, feel, connect with others and experience your life.

For me, performance isn’t about doing more. It’s about having the energy, health and confidence to fully engage with the people and experiences that matter most.

Why does safety come before performance?

Because your nervous system is designed to protect you before it helps you perform.

When your body is constantly responding to stress, it’s focused on survival rather than growth. It becomes much harder to think clearly, regulate emotions, recover well or make decisions from a place of choice.

Creating safety doesn’t mean removing all stress or challenge. It means helping your body recognise that it doesn’t need to stay on high alert all the time. Once that happens, you have a much stronger foundation to build resilience, confidence and sustainable performance.

Can nervous system regulation improve resilience?

Yes but resilience isn’t about never feeling stressed.

To me, resilience is your ability to recover from stress, adapt to change and stay connected to yourself when life becomes challenging.

Nervous system regulation helps build that capacity. Rather than reacting automatically, you begin to respond with greater awareness, flexibility and choice. Life will still have ups and downs, but you’re less likely to be knocked off course by every wave.

Is nervous system work just about relaxation?

No.

Relaxation can be one outcome, but it isn’t the goal.

Life isn’t always calm, and I wouldn’t want it to be. There will always be excitement, pressure, grief, joy and uncertainty.

Nervous system work is about increasing your capacity to experience all of those moments without becoming overwhelmed or disconnected from yourself. It’s about helping your body become more flexible and adaptable, not calm all the time.

How does breathwork support nervous system regulation?

Breathwork gives us a direct way to work with the nervous system because breathing is one of the few functions of the body that happens automatically but can also be changed consciously.

When we’re stressed, our breathing patterns often change without us noticing. We might breathe more quickly, more shallowly or even hold our breath. Over time, these patterns can reinforce the body’s stress response.

Through science-backed breathwork, we can begin to change those patterns, helping the nervous system experience greater safety and regulation. Breathwork isn’t a magic fix or something I use in isolation—it’s one part of a wider approach that also includes somatic coaching, breathing pattern analysis and nervous system education.

About Clare Pritchard

I’m Clare Pritchard, a Somatic Stress & Breathwork Coach helping people understand how their nervous system responds to chronic stress and how to change those patterns.

My work combines science backed breathwork, somatic coaching, breathing pattern analysis and nervous system education to help people move out of chronic stress patterns, reconnect with themselves and build the capacity to live with greater health, resilience and joy.

Every aspect of my work is guided by the SCP Framework: Safety, Capacity and Performance, because I believe lasting change doesn’t come from pushing harder. It comes from understanding your body and learning how to work with it, rather than against it.

If you’re ready to stop running on stress and start building a nervous system that supports the life you want to live, I’d love to help.
